As screens becomes more prominent in our culture and everyday lives, it is important we take our beloved eyes into consideration. Does being in front of monitors and screens (TV’s, computers, and even phones) have any physiological affect on our minds and bodies?
Starting at screens all day can cause problems such as headaches, eye strain, and dry eyes. We’ve all experienced it one way or another. Computer eye-wear not only enhance your vision when partaking in work or your favorite activities (such as gaming or watching YouTube videos) in front of screens but protect you from these detrimental side effects that may arise when being on the computer all day. Whether it’s at work, school, or merely at home in your leisure time, it can all add up. Video display glasses are definitely worth the investment. The post is all Gunnar Optiks — to put it simply, they have basically the highest quality video glasses out there. All other competitors are cheaper, $10 knock offs at local superstores.
What are Video Display Glasses? How do they Work?
These special glasses have special tinted lenses, with technologies to help reduce strain such as anti-glare and allow less transmission of light in order to give your eyes a break. When we look at screens, what we don’t realize is that the pixels are constantly flickering in order to project the image we are looking at. Our eyes are constantly working, registering these images every millisecond. Extended periods of time in front of screens can make our eyes work overtime, ultimately leading to headaches and strains. To put it simply: The glasses help reduce the amount of work your eyes need to do, hence reducing the detrimental effects we at times experience after a long day in front of the screen. Note: These are not 3D glasses.
Which Pair of Video Display Glasses are the Best?
We’ve done some research and have found that Gunnar Optiks has dominated the market in terms of highest rated video glasses. In fact, they own every single pair in the top 5. We’ve done some comparing and contrasting to see which pair you should purchase. You should take into consideration your budget and which features are important to you when searching. We recommend the middle-priced pair of glasses. However; if you can afford the more expensive pair, we recommend them as they’re as good as it gets. Here’s the list.
1. Gunnar Optiks RPG-05401 Full Rim Video Glasses
We’ve chosen to list these first because they are the highest rated video glasses on the internet. A little more expensive than some at a higher-average retail, Gunnar Optiks state these include i-AMP technology (their eyestrain reduction and viewing enhancement technology), an amber lens tint with anti-glare coatings and ultra-pure material for sharp, clear images. Specifically for gamers (but applicable for nearly anything that has to do with looking at a computr screen), they include a frame made of aluminum-magnesium and a gunmetal finish. They’re also comfortable with a soft rubbed tipped material near your temples and silicone nose pads.
The yellow tint truely feels easier on the eyes. The shape and design are relatively comfortable to the point where they go unnoticed after extended use. They’re not too bad looking either: a sleek look with a cool looking yellow tint give it a sporty feel.
Main features
- i-AMP technology
- Amber lens tint
- Anti-glare coating
- Ultra-pure yellow lens for sharper, clearer images
- Quad-core hinge design for proper weight balance
- Flexible frame
- Soft rubbed tipped temples and adjustable nose pads made of silicone for customization and comfort
- 1-year limited warranty by Gunnar Optiks
2. Gunnar Optiks INT-00101 Intercept Full Rim Video Glasses
Gunner Optiks continues to be reviewed as the top rated video display glasses with their INT-00101 model. Cheaper than the RPG glasses as listed previously, these glasses come with nearly the same features but at about 30$ cheaper. They offer the same i-AMP technology and amber lens tint with anti-glare and pure lens coatings. The reason for the lower price is the make of the frame: this particular pair is of ‘high tensile steel’ with an ‘onyx frame finish’, slightly cheaper than the RPG-05401. The difference is a little noticable; however, if you want to save around 30$ and can manage the different material of the frame, this pair would be more of a money-saver (you still get the same tech).
Some other aspects to look for with this pair is the overall fit: the frame is a little wider for larger heads. The nose rest is also curved (still pretty comfortable), but are not adjustable like the RPG-05401’s. Stated to get a little dirty and requires some cleaning (which is all based on your cleanliness and habits). A good buy if you’re looking to save some money as opposed to their $89 pair.
- i-AMP technology
- Amber lens tint
- Anti-glare coatings
- Ultra-pure lens for sharp and clearer computer monitor vision
- Curved nose rest for even weight distribution
- Wide fit (more ideal for larger heads)
- 1-year warrany from Gunnar Optiks
3. Gunnar Optiks ST003-CO12 Emissary Semi-Rimless Video Glasses
At 80$ retail, Gunnar’s Emissary semi-rimless glasses are merely a different style and feel that the other two listed. It is just a little under the RPG glasses, but again offer the same technology their innovative lenses hold. The i-AMP tech, anti-glare and pure lens are no different here. What’s cool is that they are lighter: graphite frame and an aluminum-magnesium make. This is all really about how you like the look and if you prefer a lighter weight pair of glasses.
To go over the glasses technology again, most reviewers state that they do as intended: reduce eyestrain, headhaces and dryness. These are a little more expensive than others on the market, but this is why they are rated so highly: you can always purchase a cheaper, even 10$ pair at Wal-Mart; however, there is no secret there. You get what you pay for. Grab this pair if you like the look and prefer a lighter weight frame.
Main Features:
- i-AMP technology
- Amber lens tint
- Anti-glare coatings
- Ultra-pure lens for sharper, clearer vision
- Aluminum-magnesium make with graphtie frame
- Lightweight construction with proper weight balance
- Squared off lenses
- Semi-rimless frame for peripheral views
- 1-year warranty by Gunnar
4. Gunnar Optiks G0005-C001 SheaDog Full Rim Glasses
This is a pair of video display glasses that are specifically for fit compatibility with headsets. Although it can be used without one, if you’re using a headset for gaming, these are the way to go. At a middle price point retail, they include the major i-AMP tech that Gunnar so proudly sports.
The arms of the eye glasses are flat as opposed to curved than others, specifically for meshing well with headsets. They don’t press against your temple very hard to ensure comfort while you game. As always, these Gunnar glasses work as advertised. Their technology is legit, as stated previously with their other models. Go with this pair if you game quite often.
Main Features:
- i-AMP technology
- Amber lens tint
- Anti-glare coatings
- Ultra-pure lens for sharper, clearer vision
- Make: high tensile steel with onyx frame finish
- Fastener free hinger design for durability
- For all head sizes, specifically for those wearing headsets
- 1-year warranty
5. Gunnar Optiks PHA-04201 MLG Phantom Full Rim Glasses
Lastly, we believe these are the coolest looking (our opinion obviously). This pair specifically has slimmer temples if that’s what you prefer. There is nothing more specific about this pair besides being around the average retail price and has a different look than the other models.
Reviews, as always, have stated that Gunnar’s technology does what it boasts about. The MLG Phantom style name hints towards more for gamers, being headset friendly with the more comfortable arms of the glasses. The nose pads are adjustable and it includes interchangeable sockets. We recommend buying the case as well.
Main Features:
- i-AMP technology
- Amber lens tint
- Anti-glare coatings
- Ultra-pure lens for vision clarification
- Full rim frame for panoramic viewing field
- Fastener free hinge design
- Flexible temples for ultimate comfort for various face shapes
- 1-year warranty
The Verdict
We know, why so many Gunnar Optiks glasses? Don’t they have any competitors? Honestly, no. The only other glasses out there are 3D glasses, and these are big and bulky. We don’t like them at all. Gunnar is dominating in terms of video display glasses right now. If you’re purchasing one of these bad boys, we recommend getting one of the most popular add-on items: the Gunnar Optiks leather carrying case. Some things to conclude with, and take consideration while you’re shopping for your video glasses. Do you:
- Prefer lighter weight? Go for the emissary model.
- Use them for strictly gaming purposes? A headset-tailored pair is best.
- Care about the more expensive frame make? The RPG is their best pair.
Remember: all Gunnar Optiks lenses we’ve spoken about have the same lens technology. So what you’re paying for is the frame make and fit that is tailored to specific preferences.
